Monday, April 23, 2018
Jessica is our lab manager here at Cozad Community Hospital. She lives in Gothenburg with her hubby Dustin, dog Howie, and cat Cougar. She graduated in 2007 from UNMC and started her career in Grand Island, NE at Saint Francis Medical Center working nights. In 2008 her and her husband moved west to Gothenburg and she started working at the Gothenburg Family Practice clinic. She missed working in a bigger lab setting so in 2011 when she heard about an opening here at Cozad she joined the team, taking over the lab manager position in Spring of 2012.
What inspired you to be a lab tech: “My freshman year of high school I was in a bad car accident that landed me in Omaha with a dislocated hip. While there one of the medical staff I remember the most was the phlebotomist that came and drew me every morning, he was cheerful, friendly, and explained why he was drawing my blood and what it would show the doctors….it peaked my interest as at that point I had never heard of lab techs. I did my research on the job and decided after shadowing a lab that’s what I wanted to do. I then applied to be a RHOP scholarship student, which meant after graduation I would return to a rural setting in Nebraska to work and the rest is history!”
Favorite part of the job: “The people! We have an amazing lab team that knows how to have fun and also get work done. And what we have here at Cozad is a rare thing…our nurses, x-ray techs, other anxillary staff, reception gals we work as a team to give the best patient care possible. I have seen this so many times during trauma and times of crisis where even if it isn’t their primary job people step in and help other departments out, and its great being part of a hospital that works that way.
Hobbies: “I like to stay active…and outside!! From running with my dog Howie, riding my horse Fury, hunting and spending time in the great outdoors with my husband I keep myself pretty busy.
