Tips for Aging at Home Safety

May 29, 2025   |   Julie Skala , Director of Central Plains Home Health and Hospice

As the days get longer and flowers begin to bloom, spring is a perfect reminder of renewal and fresh starts. It’s also a great time to check in on our wellness, especially for older adults aging at home. Creating a safe, comfortable living environment not only helps prevent injuries but also fosters independence and peace of mind.

Here are some practical tips to help you or your loved ones age safely and gracefully at home:

1. Clear the Clutter

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up, it’s about making your home safer. Remove items that could become tripping hazards, like loose rugs, electrical cords or stacks of newspapers. Keep walkways clear and well-lit, especially in high traffic areas like hallways and staircases.

2. Embrace Supportive Devices

Simple modifications can make a big difference. Install grab bars in bathrooms, non-slip mats in tubs or showers, and consider raised toilet seats or shower chairs. These additions promote stability and reduce the risk of falls.

3. Light the Way

Poor lighting is a major fall hazard. Make sure all areas of the home are well-lit, especially stairwells, entryways, and bathrooms. Consider night lights for bedrooms and hallways for easier navigation during the night.

4. Stay Active, Stay Strong

Physical activity helps maintain balance, flexibility and strength. All crucial for preventing falls. Gentle exercises like yoga, stretching, or daily walks can do wonders for overall well-being. Talk to a healthcare provider about safe exercise options.

5. Routine Health Checks

Spring is a great time to schedule annual health screenings and medication reviews. Changes in vision, hearing, or medication side effects can affect mobility and safety. Stay proactive about managing chronic conditions and maintaining good health.

6. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy

Ensure that emergency numbers are easily accessible. On the fridge, near the phone, or saved into mobile devices. Consider a personal emergency response system (PERS) for added peace of mind if living alone.

7. Stay Connected

Social wellness is just as important as physical health. Make time for regular phone or video chats with family and friends. Consider joining local clubs or senior centers to stay engaged and avoid isolation.

8. Review Your Home Layout

Are daily essentials easy to reach? Reorganize cabinets and storage so that frequently used items are at waist level. This reduces strain from bending or reaching and helps maintain independence in daily routines.

Final Thoughts

Aging at home can be a beautiful experience when done safely and thoughtfully. With a few seasonal updates and ongoing self care, you can enjoy the comfort of your home while maintaining your independence and wellness.

Spring into this new season with renewed focus on health, safety and joy. You deserve it.
