Brrr. The drop in temperature has us all reaching for every cozy blanket, cup of coffee, and excuse to stay indoors. Midwest winters are no joke, and while we love to romanticize those first snowfalls, the reality of icy roads, dry skin, and early sunsets can leave us all a little grumpy.
But winter doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom! With a little effort, you can stay active, healthy, and - dare I say - enjoy the season. Let’s dive into some practical tips to help you fight off the winter blues and stay your best self through these chilly months.
1. Keep Moving
Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to give up on staying active. Facilities like the Cozad Wellness Center are great options for walks and work outs without braving the temps. If you’re feeling adventurous on a milder day, bundle up and head outdoors. Some of my favorite walking spots include the Meadowlark Pointe walking trail, provided by the Hospital Foundation for community wide use, and Veteran’s Park, where you can squeeze in steps while your kiddos play. Plus, Veteran’s Park is well-lit for those short winter days.
2. Stay Connected and Get Festive
Winter is a great time to participate in the community. Whether it’s an activity hosted by a local business, or a simple local Christmas light tour, the festive cheer is contagious and good for the soul. Or, if you want to spread some positivity, consider volunteering. Cozad Community Leaders are always looking for helping hands to make a difference and build civic pride. It’s a great way to stay engaged and combat those cabin-fever blues.
3. Prioritize Your Hygiene (and Your Skin)
Winter is germ season, so wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and disinfect those shopping carts. Your immune system will thank you. Put some extra emphasis on moisturizing your hands, face, and lips to combat the dryness that comes with the season. A good lotion can be your best friend right now.
4. Check In With Your Doctor
Winter is also a great time to check in with your primary care provider. Have a conversation about vitamins or supplements that can help you stay healthy during these colder months. Proactive care can help you feel your best all season long.
At Cozad Community Health System, we’re committed to providing the quality care our community needs, no matter the season. From preventative care to keeping your family healthy during the colder months, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
