Staying Safe This Winter: Ice Safety Tips and Resources

Jan 16, 2025   |   Karlie Rose Buss, CCHS Marketing & Communications Director

As winter settles in, icy sidewalks and roads become an unavoidable part of daily life. Taking precautions on slick surfaces prevents injuries, and Cozad Community Health System is here to help. With a little preparation and vigilance, we can all work together to keep our community safe this season.

First and foremost, we want to give a heartfelt thank you to the CCHS Maintenance Team for their efforts in keeping our facilities safe and accessible. Their hard work ensures that patients, visitors, and staff can navigate our facilities with confidence, even during unpleasant winter weather.

To further enhance safety, CCHS has placed additional ice melt baggies at all of our facilities. These baggies are available for anyone to use. If you encounter a slick spot while visiting one of our buildings, simply grab a bag and sprinkle ice melt on the area to help eliminate the hazard. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in preventing slips and falls.

Planning to head out for errands or other activities after your visit at CCHS? Grab a bag of ice melt to take with you! Keeping a small supply of ice melt on hand ensures you’re prepared to treat icy spots on the go - whether it’s a spot on a community sidewalk or on your own driveway. Our goal is to extend safety beyond our facilities and into the community.

Tips for Navigating Icy Conditions

Wear Proper Footwear: Choose shoes or boots with good traction to reduce the risk of slipping.

Take Small Steps: Short, careful steps help you maintain balance on slick surfaces.

Use Handrails: When available, use handrails for extra stability.

Pay Attention to Conditions: Stay alert for hidden ice, particularly in shaded areas where it may not be visible.

At CCHS, your safety is our priority. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the ice melt stations and do their part to keep sidewalks and driveways safe this winter. Together, we can make this season a little less slippery for everyone.

Let’s work together to stay upright and injury free this winter. Thank you for helping us keep Cozad safe, one step at a time!
