Managing Diabetes Through the Holidays

Nov 28, 2024   |   Karlie Rose Buss, CCHS Marketing & Communications Director

Between festive meals, seasonal treats, and the added stress of holiday planning, navigating the challenges of diabetes management through the holidays may feel overwhelming. However, with the right support and education, managing diabetes and taking control of your health is achievable. At Cozad Community Health System, Lauren Reynolds, RN, CDCES, offers guidance through the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program to help you stay on track.

With the personalized, hands on guidance of Lauren, this program is designed to empower individuals with diabetes with the tools they need. “I’ve always really enjoyed educating my patients and building relationships with them,” Lauren shares on her 8 years of experience in a variety of nursing roles. “With Diabetes Education, I get to do both of those things. I get to watch my patients grow in their knowledge and thrive while taking the reins of their health and managing their disease process on their own with confidence.”

Diabetes is a complex condition, whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2, and Lauren understands how intimidating a diagnosis can feel. “Sometimes we just need to know that someone is in our corner,” she says. “I never want my patients to feel ashamed or intimidated to come and see me because they think I’m going to tell them what they’re doing wrong. It’s the opposite. I always tell my patients, if you don’t know better, how can you do better? My job is to provide the tools for the toolbox, and the rest is on the patient.”

The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at CCHS is accredited through the American Diabetes Association and Bryan Health, which ensures a high standard of care. The program follows seven self-care behaviors: problem-solving, reducing risk, monitoring, healthy eating, medications, active lifestyle, and healthy coping.

“At the center of the program is always the patient,” Lauren explains. “It truly is individualized to meet the needs and concerns of each person. It’s not one size fits all.”

Lauren typically sees her patients a few times to cover all topics, answer questions, and assess their goals. “This allows us to address each individual’s unique challenges and concerns. Whether it’s navigating holiday meals, finding time for exercise, or coping with stress, we work together to find solutions.”

Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holidays

1. Plan Ahead: Prepare a game plan for holiday meals, including portion control and healthier alternatives to traditional dishes.

2. Stay Active: Take advantage of cooler weather to enjoy outdoor activities like walking or hiking with family.

3. Check Your Levels: Monitor your blood sugar regularly, especially after meals.

4. Indulge Wisely: It’s okay to enjoy a treat or two but balance indulgences with healthy choices.

5. Reach Out: Don’t hesitate to seek support from diabetes educators or healthcare providers.

If you or a loved one could benefit from diabetes education or support, Lauren encourages you to reach out. “You can always reach me at the hospital, just call 784-2261 and ask for Lauren in Diabetic Education or Population Health. I also always encourage patients to talk to their primary care provider about diabetes education. Most often, providers won’t tell you that you couldn’t use a little more education or encouragement.”

As you navigate the holidays this year, remember that support is just a call away. Managing diabetes doesn’t mean giving up the joys of the season, it means making informed choices and having the tools you need to thrive. Let CCHS and Lauren help you on your journey to better health.
